If I were to ask you how many times you have read, listened or thought about the most famous psalm in the Bible, what would be your response? You would probably say countless times. Which psalm would that be? The Psalm I am referring to, is no other than Psalm 23 written by King David. This is one of the most known and quoted psalms in the Bible, however, did you know there is a hidden gem in that psalm. What is that hidden gem you ask, it is the attributes of God. The following are attributes of God found in this psalm:
Jehovah-Jireh: The Lord Provides(v1)
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
There is nothing more to want from this life because God, as our Shepherd, provides for our every need.
Jehovah-Shalom: The Lord is Peace(v2)
“He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.”
We have the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. We don’t worry about what the enemy can do to us because our Shepherd is watching over us.
Jehovah-Rapha: The Lord Heals and Restores(v3a)
“He restores my soul.”
God is our loving father that heals and restores our broken hearts.
Jehovah-Tsidkenu: The Lord our Righteousness(v3b)
“He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
As believers, we know our righteousness comes from Christ; he shows us the way to the Father.
Jehovah-Shammah: The Lord is there(v4)
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
His presence in our lives makes all the difference because greater is he that is in us than he who is in the world.
Jehovah-Nissi: The Lord is my Banner(v5a)
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies”
The Lord our God fights our battles and gives us the victory.
Jehovah-M’Kaddesh: The Lord who Sanctifies(v5b)
“You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”
God consecrates you for his purposes. He sets you apart so that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Jehovah-Rapha: The Lord who Heals(v6)
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever”.
We understand that this world is not our permanent dwelling place. While we live in this world we will have tribulations. We will have to deal with sickness, however, one day the Lord will make all thing new and take away our pain.
