Last week, I wrote about William Carey’s quote that says, “expect great things from God…attempt great things for God.” I very much resonate with this quote. I have never been very good and doing things halfway. I am all in are not interested, and faith in God should be an all-in thing. Part-time faith helps you stay lukewarm, and being lukewarm is absolutely something God does not want for us or from us. In the Gospel of Mark chapter six, Jesus returns to his hometown. Instead of the people believing in who He was, they questioned who He was.
Mark 6:2b-5a
“Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4 And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.” 5 And he could do no mighty work there
Their unbelief caused Jesus to do no miracles there. I know that we are mostly not aware of the miracles that go on around us daily. However, what if God wants to show us miracles and our lack of faith is getting in the way. I have seen some pretty amazing miracles in my life. One of the first miracles I remember happened only a couple of days after I gave my live to Jesus. There was a girl at our youth camp that severely sprained her ankle. It was very swollen. We had a handful of other people already injured, so we did not have any more crutches, so we ended up carrying her around. One time on an extra-long time of carrying her, the adult with us said, “why don’t we take a break and pray for her ankle to be healed?” So, we set her down and each of us prayed over her, and within 30 minutes she was walking around with an ankle that was no longer swollen. I remember praying and believing that God would heal her and He did. I will add that God has not granted every one of my prayers, because He is God and I am not, but I firmly believe that God wants to answer prayers because we believe He will accomplish what is being prayed for. I have seen that so many times since that day at youth camp 37 years ago. Our church has experienced this multiple times since I arrived nearly six years ago.
So, what it the point of this? I believe that our level of faith in God truly matters to God doing miraculous things. Whether it be financial or physical, God can do miracles. Do you believe that? If everything in our life can be explained by our work or our efforts, why do we need God? God does the supernatural and we need to expect great things from Him and by expecting great things from Him, we will attempt great things for Him because we believe He never fails. So, let’s not be the people from Nazareth, who did not expect much from Jesus, but let’s be people fully trusting and believing with huge faith that God will do something amazing.
