This month, I have been focusing our blog on the famous quote from William Carey that says, “Expect great things from God…Attempt great things for God.” Expecting and attempting anything takes some level of faith. As I said earlier this month, I believe God wants us to have great, strong, unwavering faith in Him. There is also some level of risk taking involve in attempt something great. Whether you are a thinker or a doer also comes into to play with expectations and efforts. There are extreme thinkers that have been known for “paralysis by analysis.” They think about something so long that they never act. There are extreme doers that move so fast they never consider the possible outcomes or consequences. Those are the extremes that most people do not fall into. I once had a boss, who was very much a doer. He was once described as a “ready, fire, aim” guy. Often firing before a good plan was in place to carry it through or make it last. I had another boss who would over analyze everything to the point of frustration by those under him. Thinkers and doers are needed for great things to be done. They can also help each other develop excitement for something great.

To very few people’s surprise, I fall in the doer category. I also care about details, so I seldomly do things on a whim. I  believe that doing something is better than doing nothing, but I have learned a lot about slowing down more to gain input for a better outcome. Balance is a very tricky thing, and hard to maintain. However, this is in and of ourselves in our own minds and bodies. What happens when God becomes more a part of the conversation? In Romans 8:31 is says, “If God is for us who can be against us.” As a doer, I hear this and say, “Let’s go.” As a thinker, once you process that verse, the response should be “let’s go” as well. This to me is the heart behind Carey’s quote. We need to see that when God is part of the equation, EVERYTHING CHANGES!!! If you are to expect great things from God, your actions should reflect a God that never fails. Your thoughts should be aware of God’s strength to remind you that God never fails. If you attempt great things for God, your actions and thought should be based on faith in an unfailing God. So, let me sum this up and tie it in a bow for doers and thinkers…Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love the Lord with all your mind, soul, body and strength. So, it appears that all the doers and all the thinkers are going to best show their love for the Lord by trust and believing in God to come through no matter what. The question, is does your faith and trust help you or hurt you to expect great things from God and attempt great things for God?
