Orphan Care

Our mission

To educate and involve Shady Oaks Baptist Church in adoption, foster and orphan care in our community and throughout the world, embracing the spirit of adoption according to biblical principles. To attend to the fatherless by raising awareness of their current needs, providing support to families of adopted and foster children, committing to pray for them and connecting these children to families to the life and love of Christ.

Caring for Orphans

“The deepest and strongest foundation for adoption is located not in the act of humans adopting humans, but in God adopting humans. And this act is not part of His ordinary providence in the world; it is at the heart of the Gospel.” -John Piper

Why Orphan Care

The Bible is clear that caring for orphans is not reserved to a select few, but rather every Christ follower is called to love the orphan in some capacity. It’s the realization that we were once fatherless but were rescued by a compassionate God and adopted into His family.

  • It is estimated that there are 143 million orphans worldwide (recent UNICEF report). However, the UNICEF numbers don’t include abandonment (millions of children) as well as sold and/or trafficked children.
  • Approximately 26,000 to 30,000 children under the age of 5 living in extreme poverty die each day.
  • Child-headed households are becoming more common as potential guardians succumb to AIDS or other causes of death.
The Solution

The church of Jesus Christ is the most powerful force in the world. Understanding that the life of the church is the heart of God, and that the heart of God is to serve a broken world – we believe that Jesus has commanded the Church to be the solution.

“Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” – James 1:27
